Legal Name Change Workshop

29 Mar 2026 12PM

Did you know that changing your legal name and gender marker is free in Victoria?

In November 2025, after decades of advocacy and activism from the trans and gender diverse community, the Victorian government removed every cost associated with changing gender markers on birth certificates.

This means that for anyone born in Victoria, the only cost of affirming your identity is the optional cost of ordering a replacement birth certificate. Also note that we are willing to do our best to help navigate Non-Victorian born people, either by applying to their state, territory or country of birth or through an application to the Victorian government.

There are still plenty of hoops to jump through - especially if you were born interstate or overseas - and the process still takes a lot of time and effort, which makes it really easy to put off. That's where we come in!

Sabby will provide a friendly, welcoming space where we can help you navigate the whole process:

  • Checking whether you are eligible for a legal name / gender marker change in Victoria
  • Gathering the necessary proof of identity documents
  • Filling out forms and getting supporting statements
  • Making a list of places to update with your new details
  • Helping interstate folks navigate the different requirements and costs for each state

This workshop will be taking place just before Transgender Day of Visibility (31st March) - so whether you've been putting off a legal name change for a while now, or whether you've gone through the process already, or even if you don't want to go through the trouble of changing your legal name or gender at all, feel free to come along.

Hosted by Carey!
